Take care of yourself, each other, and our native forest! The Stairs are DANGEROUS. Please use common sense.

The City expects to open the Stairs for public access sometime in late September or early October. Until then, those who climb the Stairs are trespassing. Climbers must realize they are responsible for their own actions:

1. Don't throw anything off the heights.

2. Be aware of those above and below you.

3. Be courteous. Hike with aloha. The Stairs are narrow—you will have to pick your place to pass.

4. Don't attract attention to yourself unless you need help. Rescue teams have been called out when people were just waving at the cars below.

5. Pack out every thing you take in. Litter spoils the Stairs for everyone. Don't make someone else pack out your garbage.

6. Don't deface structures or native plants. Be sure to clean your clothes and boots before climbing. Don't allow weed seeds to hitchhike on your clothes and invade our native forest.

7. Be cautious—the Stairs are very slippery when wet.

8. Good climbers always have three good holds. Do not trust any single step or railing.

9. Understand that the climate can change rapidly. Wind and rain can envelop you quickly. Hypothermia can kill. The higher you go, the colder it gets. The summit can be hostile. Take a windbreaker and water with you.
